Light a Candle While You Get Ready, Even in Daylight: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Who says candles are only for the evening?

Getting ready can be one of the most rushed parts of the day. We dash between the bathroom and the bedroom, hunt for a matching sock and check the time every two minutes.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and light a candle while you get ready, even in daylight? It feels a little indulgent. That is exactly the point.

One small flame can change the whole feel of a morning.

Make it cosy

A few small touches make getting ready feel like a treat.

Before you start, set up your space:

  • A candle in a safe spot on your dressing table or bathroom shelf
  • A scent you love, or an unscented one if you prefer
  • Your clothes laid out ready
  • A warm drink within reach
  • Your phone out of sight, not propped up beside the mirror

You do not need fancy candles. A simple tea light in a pretty holder works beautifully.

Why light a candle in daylight?

Lighting a candle is a small signal to yourself that this time matters. It can:

  • Slow you down before the day speeds up
  • Add warmth to a grey, chilly morning
  • Fill the room with a gentle scent
  • Turn an everyday routine into a ritual

Your 15 minutes by candlelight

Let the flame set the pace.

  • Light your candle first. Before anything else, strike the match and watch it catch.
  • Take three slow breaths. Breathe in the scent and let your shoulders drop.
  • Get ready slowly. Wash your face, brush your hair, moisturise with care.
  • Dress with intention. Pick something that feels soft and comfortable.
  • Pause before you go. Sit for a moment with your drink and the flicker of the flame.

Slow it right down

You might feel the pull to rush. That is completely normal. Mornings have trained us to hurry.

As you get ready, try to notice:

  • The soft flicker of the flame
  • The scent slowly filling the room
  • The warmth of the water on your face
  • How much calmer the room feels

If you catch yourself rushing, glance at the candle and let it remind you to slow down.

Finish gently

When you are ready, blow the candle out and take a moment to enjoy the curl of smoke. Carry that calm with you as you head out of the door.

You could also:

  • Keep a “getting ready” candle that is just for mornings
  • Light one in the bathroom for your evening routine too
  • Swap scents with the seasons
  • Make it your little morning ritual

And of course, never leave a lit candle unattended. Always blow it out before you leave the room.

Your 15-minute challenge

Tomorrow morning, give yourself 15 minutes.

Light a candle. Make a warm drink. Put your phone away.

Then get ready slowly, by candlelight, even if the sun is shining.

It does not have to be a special occasion. It does not have to be dark outside.

It just has to be yours.

Because the way you start your day shapes how the rest of it feels.

You deserve a gentle start.
