Have a Proper, Unrushed Catch Up Over Tea: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

When did you last talk to a friend without one of you glancing at the clock?

Most of our catch ups are squeezed in. Five minutes at the school gate, a voice note in the car, a quick hello in the supermarket aisle. We swap headlines but rarely the real stories.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and have a proper, unrushed catch up over tea? Face to face, cups in hand, with nowhere else either of you needs to be.

Your kitchen table is the perfect venue.

Make it cosy

Before your friend arrives, set a gentle scene:

  • Two comfy seats, close enough to chat easily
  • A pot of tea or a cafetiere, so nobody has to get up for a refill
  • A plate of biscuits or a slice of cake each
  • Soft lighting and a throw on the back of the sofa
  • Both phones tucked away for the duration

Your 15 minutes of good conversation

  • Invite them in. A friend, a sister, a neighbour you keep meaning to see.
  • Pour and settle. Let the first few sips do the work of slowing you both down.
  • Ask how they really are. Then wait for the answer behind the first answer.
  • Share something true. Not just the busy bits, but how you are actually feeling.
  • Let it meander. Old memories, silly tangents, plans you might never make.

Slow it right down

A good catch up is not about covering everything. It is about being properly present with someone you care about, even for a short while.

As you chat, try to notice:

  • The warmth of the cup and the warmth of the company
  • The comfortable pauses that do not need filling
  • How your friend’s face lights up at certain stories
  • How much lighter you feel after a proper laugh

Finish gently

Before they leave, put a date in the diary for the next one, so it does not slip for months.

You could also:

  • Take turns hosting each month
  • Meet at a quiet cafe with comfy armchairs
  • Send a little message afterwards to say how lovely it was
  • Bring a flask on a walk and catch up on a bench

Your 15-minute challenge

This week, give yourself 15 minutes.

Message a friend. Warm the teapot. Put the phones away.

Then sit down together and talk as though there is all the time in the world.

It does not have to be a long visit. It does not have to be a tidy house.

It just has to be this week.

Good friends are worth slowing down for.
