Are your feet cold right now?
Cold feet have a way of making the whole of you feel chilly and a bit miserable. Bare feet on a kitchen floor, thin socks inside work shoes, toes that never quite warm up until you are in bed.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and wear thick socks all day? Start the morning by choosing your cosiest pair and let your feet be warm and happy from the very first step.
Odd socks are absolutely fine.
Make it cosy
Before you get dressed, have a little rummage:
- Your thickest pair of wool, knitted or boot socks
- A spare pair for the afternoon, in case they get damp
- Slippers or roomy shoes that fit over them comfortably
- A warm spot on the radiator to pop them on first
- A soft rug or mat for your favourite chair
Your 15 minutes of warm toes
- Choose your pair. Pick the ones that feel like a hug for your feet.
- Warm them first. Give them a few minutes on the radiator while you have breakfast.
- Pull them on slowly. Notice the soft, toasty wool wrapping round your toes.
- Put your feet up. Take a minute on the sofa with your sock feet tucked under you.
- Keep them on. Wear them all day, through chores, emails and the school run.
Slow it right down
It is such a small thing, yet warm feet can quietly lift your mood for hours. Hygge is often hidden in the comforts we barely think about.
As you go about your day, try to notice:
- The cushioned feeling with every step across the floor
- How much more relaxed you feel when your toes are warm
- The quiet padding sound around the house
- Whether you reach for the heating a little less
Finish gently
At the end of the day, curl up with your sock feet tucked under a blanket and give a small thank you to the humble woolly sock. More ideas for staying snug can be found in my winter hygge rituals.
You could also:
- Treat yourself to one really lovely pair for the winter
- Keep a cosy pair in your work bag or desk drawer
- Have a family sock day where everyone wears their snuggliest
- Learn to darn a hole in an old favourite pair
Do take care on stairs and hard floors, as thick socks can be slippery.
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Find your thickest socks. Warm them up. Pull them on.
Then put your feet up for a few minutes before the day really starts.
It does not have to be a matching pair. It does not have to be a day off.
It just has to be today.
Happy feet make for a happier day.
