Go Looking for the First Changing Leaves: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Plum graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading 'Go looking for the first changing leaves – 15 minute hygge moments' by Collette Costello.

Have you spotted the first leaf turning yet this year?

Autumn rarely arrives all at once. It creeps in one leaf at a time, a flash of yellow here, a blush of red there, while most of us are hurrying to work or the school gate with our heads down.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and go looking for the first changing leaves? Think of it as a gentle treasure hunt, with colour as the prize.

One orange leaf is a win.

Make it cosy

Before you head out, gather a few simple things:

  • A warm jumper or a light coat with deep pockets
  • Comfortable shoes for wandering, not marching
  • A scarf, in case the breeze has a bite to it
  • Your phone tucked away, or kept just for a photo or two
  • A street, park or garden with a few trees in it

Your 15 minutes of colour-spotting

  • Walk slower than usual. Let this be a stroll with nowhere to be.
  • Look up. Scan the tops of the trees, where the colour often starts first.
  • Hunt for the edges. Many leaves turn from the tips inwards, green in the middle and gold at the rim.
  • Name the colours. Mustard, rust, copper, plum, butter yellow. See how many you can find.
  • Pause at your favourite. Stand under it for a minute and just look.

Slow it right down

This is not about finding the most spectacular tree in town. It is about catching the season in its very first moments, before it is everywhere and easy to take for granted.

As you wander, try to notice:

  • Which trees are turning and which are still holding on to summer
  • How the low autumn sun lights up a single yellow leaf
  • The cooler, earthier smell of the air
  • How your breathing slows when you are looking rather than rushing

Finish gently

On your way home, pick up one fallen leaf that caught your eye and bring it inside. Pop it on the windowsill or tuck it into a book as a little marker of the season starting. For more ideas, have a look at how to create a hygge moment this autumn.

You could also:

  • Walk the same route each week and watch the colours deepen
  • Take one photo of the same tree every few days
  • Invite a child or a friend to see who spots the reddest leaf
  • Come home to a warm drink and a blanket

Your 15-minute challenge

Today, give yourself 15 minutes.

Pull on a jumper. Step outside. Look up at the trees.

Then walk slowly until you find your first golden leaf of the year.

It does not have to be a long walk. It does not have to be the countryside.

It just has to be today.

Autumn is waiting at the end of your street.
