Have a Proper Cup of Tea, Sat Down, No Multitasking: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

How many cups of tea have you reheated in the microwave this week?

Most of us drink tea on the move. A sip while emptying the dishwasher, a gulp between emails, a mug left on the stairs and found cold an hour later.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and have a proper cup of tea, sat down, with no multitasking? Just you, a chair and a hot drink, enjoyed while it is still hot.

A builder’s brew in a chipped mug is perfect.

Make it cosy

Before the kettle boils, clear a little space for yourself:

  • A comfy chair or a spot by the window
  • Your phone in another room or face down out of reach
  • A biscuit on a plate, not eaten from the packet
  • A cushion or blanket if the room is chilly
  • The to-do list closed and put away for now

Your 15 minutes of sitting still

  • Make it how you like it. Your favourite tea, your favourite mug, exactly the right amount of milk.
  • Actually sit down. Not perched on the arm of the sofa. Properly sat, feet down.
  • Hold the mug. Wrap both hands around it and feel the warmth.
  • Do just this. No scrolling, no folding washing, no planning tomorrow.
  • Drink it all. Stay put until the very last mouthful.

Slow it right down

Your hands may twitch towards your phone. Your mind will probably start writing a shopping list. That is normal. Just bring yourself back to the cup.

As you sip, try to notice:

  • The steam curling up from the top
  • How the first sip tastes different from the last
  • The weight of your body sinking into the chair
  • The sounds in the room when you are not adding to them

Finish gently

When the mug is empty, sit for one more breath before you get up. Then carry on with your day a little steadier than before.

You could also:

  • Make your mid-afternoon cuppa a sit-down one every day
  • Choose one chair that is just for tea breaks
  • Tell the family this is your ten quiet minutes
  • Take your tea outside on a dry day and sit on the step

Your 15-minute challenge

Today, give yourself 15 minutes.

Put the kettle on. Put your phone down. Sit in your favourite chair.

Then drink your tea while it is hot, and do nothing else at all.

It does not have to be fancy tea. It does not have to be a quiet house.

It just has to be today.

You deserve to finish a hot drink.
