When did you last ring a friend for no reason at all?
These days, most of our catching up happens in messages. A thumbs up here, a quick reply there. It keeps us connected, but it is not quite the same as talking.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and ring a friend just to catch up? No news to share, no favour to ask. Just a chat.
“I was just thinking about you” is reason enough.
Make it cosy
Before you call, make yourself comfy:
- A cosy chair or your favourite corner of the sofa
- A hot drink within reach
- A blanket or cushion to snuggle into
- A quiet moment when you won’t be interrupted
- The TV off and other apps closed
Your 15 minutes of catching up
- Choose someone. A friend you have been meaning to speak to for a while.
- Send a quick message first. Ask if they have time for a chat, if that feels easier.
- Get settled. Drink in hand, feet up, before you dial.
- Really listen. Ask how they are, and wait for the real answer.
- Share a little too. Let them know how you are, honestly.
Slow it right down
Phoning out of the blue can feel a bit awkward at first. Most people are delighted to hear from a friend, even if it has been a while.
As you chat, try to notice:
- The sound of your friend’s voice and laugh
- How easily the conversation flows
- The memories that pop up as you talk
- How warm you feel when you hang up
Finish gently
Before you say goodbye, make a little plan to speak again or meet up.
You could also:
- Make a list of friends you would love to catch up with
- Ring one person every week this autumn
- Go for a walk while you chat
- Try a video call for faraway friends
Your 15-minute challenge
This week, give yourself 15 minutes.
Make a hot drink. Get comfy. Pick up the phone.
Then ring a friend, just to catch up.
It does not have to be a long call. It does not have to be about anything.
It just has to be a real conversation.
Friendship is the cosiest thing of all.
