Watch the Rain from Somewhere Warm: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

When did you last stop and simply watch the rain?

Rain usually means hurrying. Dashing to the car, wrestling with an umbrella, grumbling about the weather.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and watch the rain from somewhere warm? There is something deeply cosy about being snug inside while the weather does its thing outside.

A drizzly Monday counts.

Make it cosy

Before you settle in, make it cosy:

  • A comfy chair by a window or a sheltered doorway
  • A blanket over your knees
  • A mug of tea, coffee or hot chocolate
  • A lamp on if the day is dark
  • Phones and the TV off

Your 15 minutes with the rain

  • Find your spot. Somewhere warm and dry where you can see or hear the rain.
  • Make a hot drink. Something to hold and sip while you watch.
  • Get comfortable. Tuck your feet up and pull the blanket round you.
  • Watch and listen. Let your eyes follow the drops down the glass.
  • Breathe slowly. Let the sound of the rain set your pace.

Slow it right down

It might feel like you should be doing something useful. Give yourself permission to do nothing but watch.

As you sit, try to notice:

  • The patter of rain on the window or roof
  • Drops racing each other down the glass
  • How the light and colours outside change
  • How safe and snug it feels to be indoors

Finish gently

When the 15 minutes are up, or the rain eases off, take one more slow breath before you get up.

You could also:

  • Open a window a crack to hear and smell the rain
  • Sit in a covered porch, conservatory or garden shelter
  • Read a book with the rain as your soundtrack
  • Make rainy days your excuse for this little ritual

Your 15-minute challenge

Next time it rains, give yourself 15 minutes.

Find a warm spot. Make a hot drink. Wrap up in a blanket.

Then watch the rain and do nothing else.

It does not have to be a storm. It does not have to be a day off.

It just has to be raining.

There is no such thing as bad weather when you are warm inside.
