Is your bed still dressed for summer?
The evenings are darker and there is a nip in the air, but many of us are still sleeping under the same light duvet and crisp sheets we had in August. Then we wonder why bedtime feels a bit chilly.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and swap your bedding for something cosier? A few soft, warm layers can turn your bed into a proper nest for the colder months.
Just a new pillowcase is a start.
Make it cosy
Before you begin, dig out a few bits from the airing cupboard:
- Brushed cotton or flannel sheets, if you have them
- Your warmer winter duvet
- A chunky knitted throw or a soft blanket for the end of the bed
- An extra cushion or two in warm, earthy colours
- Some music or a podcast to keep you company
Your 15 minutes of nest-making
- Strip it back. Take off the summer sheets and give the room a quick airing.
- Start with softness. Smooth on your brushed cotton sheet and feel the difference under your hands.
- Add the weight. Shake out your thicker duvet and let it settle.
- Layer it up. Drape a throw across the foot of the bed and plump the pillows.
- Test it out. Lie down for a minute and enjoy your freshly made nest.
Slow it right down
Changing the bed is usually a rushed job squeezed in between washes. This time, let it be a small act of care for the person who sleeps there. That is you.
As you make up the bed, try to notice:
- The brushed, velvety feel of the fabric
- The weight of a thicker duvet as it settles
- How warmer colours change the mood of the room
- That little flutter of looking forward to bedtime
Finish gently
Turn down the corner of the duvet, switch on a bedside lamp and leave the room ready and waiting for tonight. For more ways to get snug as the nights lengthen, take a look at these winter hygge rituals for the darkest months.
You could also:
- Fold your summer bedding away with a lavender bag
- Add a sheepskin or soft rug beside the bed for cold feet
- Keep a pair of bed socks in the bedside drawer
- Do the same swap on the children’s beds
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Pull off the summer sheets. Find something softer. Layer on a throw.
Then lie back for a moment and sink into your new autumn nest.
It does not have to be brand new bedding. It does not have to match.
It just has to be today.
A softer bed makes for softer evenings.
