Make a Comfort Meal From What’s in the Cupboard: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Navy graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading ’Make a comfort meal from what’s in the cupboard – 15 minute hygge moments’ by Collette Costello.

Have you ever stood in front of the cupboard and thought there was nothing for tea?

It happens to all of us at the end of a long day. Tired, a bit hungry and tempted to order a takeaway or dash to the shop. But there is usually more hiding at the back of the cupboard than we think.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and make a comfort meal from what’s in the cupboard? A tin, a packet and a bit of imagination can turn into something warm and filling.

Pasta and cheese absolutely counts.

Make it cosy

Before you start cooking, set the scene a little:

  • A quick look through your cupboard, fridge and freezer
  • A favourite pan or your trusty saucepan
  • A lamp on in the kitchen instead of the big light
  • Some gentle music or the radio playing
  • A big bowl ready to fill

Your 15 minutes of cupboard cooking

  • Take stock. Line up what you have on the counter. Tins, pasta, rice, eggs, odds and ends.
  • Pick a base. Something starchy and warming, like pasta, rice, toast or potatoes.
  • Add some comfort. A tin of tomatoes, a handful of cheese, a spoon of butter.
  • Season it well. Dried herbs, pepper, a stock cube or a dash of something you love.
  • Serve it in a bowl. Comfort food always tastes better curled up with a spoon.

Slow it right down

There is something really satisfying about making a meal from almost nothing. No recipe, no shopping list, just a little creativity and a warm kitchen.

As you cook, try to notice:

  • The smell of onions or garlic softening in the pan
  • The steam rising and the windows misting up
  • How the kitchen warms up around you
  • The small pride of making something from not much

Finish gently

Sit down to eat, even if it is just you. Put your phone away, wrap your hands around the bowl and enjoy every mouthful.

You could also:

  • Write down your creation so you can make it again
  • Keep a few comfort staples in stock for cold nights
  • Give your cupboard meal a silly name the family will remember
  • Make a cupboard supper once a week to use things up

Do take care around hot pans, and check use-by dates and any food allergies before you serve.

Your 15-minute challenge

Tonight, give yourself 15 minutes.

Open the cupboard. Pick three things. Put the pan on.

Then sit down with a warm bowl and eat slowly.

It does not have to be a proper recipe. It does not have to need a trip to the shop.

It just has to be tonight.

Comfort is often already on the shelf.
