How many lights are on in your home right now?
Most evenings, every room seems to blaze at once. The kitchen light, the hall light, the telly, the landing. It keeps us switched on long after the day should be winding down.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and turn off every light except one lamp? One small pool of warm light can change the whole mood of a room.
A bedside lamp is perfect.
Make it cosy
Before you reach for the switches, get a few things ready:
- Your favourite lamp, ideally with a warm bulb
- A comfy chair or sofa within its glow
- A soft throw to pull over your knees
- A mug of something warm
- Your phone on silent, face down in another room
Your 15 minutes of lamplight
- Walk the house. Go from room to room and switch off every light as you pass.
- Turn off screens too. The telly and laptop glow counts as light.
- Choose your lamp. Switch on just one, in the room where you want to rest.
- Settle beside it. Curl up close enough to feel part of its little circle.
- Let your eyes adjust. Give it a minute or two and the room will feel softer.
Slow it right down
The first few moments might feel a little gloomy. Stay with it. Low, warm light is a gentle signal that the busy part of the day is over.
As you sit in the lamplight, try to notice:
- The soft shadows in the corners of the room
- How the colours around you look warmer
- The quiet that seems to come with the dark
- Your breathing slowing without you trying
Finish gently
When your 15 minutes are up, there is no need to flick everything back on. See if you can carry the lamplight into the rest of your evening. It is one of those simple cosy rituals for the darker months that is easy to keep.
You could also:
- Swap a cool white bulb for a warm one
- Read a few pages by the lamp before bed
- Make one-lamp evenings a weekly habit
- Invite the family to join you for a quiet chat
Your 15-minute challenge
Tonight, give yourself 15 minutes.
Switch off the lights. Turn on one lamp. Sit down beside it.
Then let the soft glow do its quiet work.
It does not have to be a beautiful lamp. It does not have to be a tidy room.
It just has to be tonight.
Sometimes one small light is all you need.
