How to Thread a Sewing Machine (and Start Sewing Without Tangles)

Nanna Betty Sewing School card: How to Thread a Sewing Machine

If your sewing machine keeps snapping threads or jamming, nine times out of ten it’s the threading. The good news is that most domestic machines are threaded in a very similar way, and once you know what to look for it only takes a minute.

Threading the top thread

When the top thread is threaded correctly, it follows the shape of the letter N as it goes from the reel, down, up through the take-up lever and back down to the needle.

  • Use the thread retainer disc on the reel, so the thread doesn’t unwind too quickly.
  • Make sure the thread sits between the tension discs. If it misses them, your stitches will loop and tangle.
  • Set the tension to about 3 to 4 for general sewing.

Threading the bobbin (bottom thread)

The bottom thread is wound onto a small spool, also called a bobbin, which sits in a case under the needle.

  • Wind the thread tightly and evenly onto the spool.
  • On most machines the bobbin thread should unwind anti-clockwise. Check your manual if you’re not sure.
  • After winding, release the bobbin winder. If it’s left on, the needle won’t move.

Plastic or metal spool? Remember: plastic to plastic, metal to metal! Plastic spools usually drop into a plastic case on top of the machine. Metal spools go in a removable metal case that fits in the side. Use the type your machine was made for.

How to start sewing without tangles

Once your machine is threaded, these five steps help stop the threads bunching up underneath your fabric.

  1. Put your fabric under the machine foot.
  2. Hold the top thread and turn the handle towards you, so the needle goes down and back up once.
  3. Gently tug the top thread. It will pull a loop of the bottom thread up through the fabric.
  4. Pull both threads out to at least 15cm and lay them under the foot, towards the back of the machine.
  5. Lower the needle into the fabric, lower the foot, and start sewing.

Top tip: never, never turn the handle backwards. Always turn it towards you. If the fabric does get stuck, gently wiggle the handle to free it.

Quick threading checklist

  • Top thread between the tension discs.
  • Tension set to about 3 to 4.
  • Thread wound tightly on the spool.
  • Bobbin winder released.
  • Both threads pulled out at least 15cm before you start.
