Sew Your Own Cosy Pyjama Trousers: Hyggebukser

Handmade mustard and cream check pyjama trousers with an elastic waist laid on a knitted blanket with wool socks, hot chocolate and a candle

Eight evenings. Fifteen minutes each. The cosiest trousers you’ll ever own.

In Denmark, hyggebukser are the comfy trousers you pull on the moment you get home. The ones that say: the day is done, now it’s time to be cosy.

Imagine pulling on a pair you made yourself, in a fabric you chose. Wear them for a film night, a lazy Sunday morning, or a hygge pyjama party with friends.

Is This For Me?

  • Yes, if you’ve made your hygge bag. You already know the basics. Now you’ll learn gentle curves and elastic.
  • Yes, by hand or by machine. Sew slowly by hand, stitch by stitch, or on your sewing machine. Both are welcome here.
  • Yes, if you’re busy. Fifteen minutes an evening is all it takes. Miss a night? Just pick up where you left off.
  • Yes, if you want to slow down. This isn’t about perfect seams. It’s about giving yourself a little time, and ending up with something cosy you made yourself.

Why I Made This

My Nanna Betty was a machinist at the Macintosh factory in Salford, and she taught me to sew one small step at a time on cosy Sunday afternoons. I’ve taught sewing for years since, and I’ve made these packs the way she taught me: gently, simply, and with plenty of tea.
