When did you last receive a handwritten note, and how did it make you feel?
We send messages all day long. Quick texts, voice notes, a thumbs up, a heart. They are lovely, but they are gone in a scroll.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and handwrite a note to someone you love? No screens, no autocorrect. Just a pen, some paper and a few honest, warm words.
It is a small thing that can mean an enormous amount, to them and to you.
Make it cosy
Hygge is about warmth and connection, and writing to someone you love has both.
Before you start, gather a few simple things:
- A card, notepaper or a pretty postcard
- A pen you enjoy writing with
- A cosy spot at the kitchen table or on the sofa
- A warm drink
- A candle or lamp for soft light
- Your phone in another room
Choose who to write to
Think of someone who would smile to find your words waiting for them. You could write to:
- Your partner, tucked under their pillow or in a coat pocket
- Your children, popped in a lunchbox or on their bed
- A parent or grandparent who would treasure it
- An old friend you have not seen in a while
- Someone going through a tough time
Your 15 minutes of writing
There is no right way to do this. It does not need to be long or poetic. It just needs to be from you.
- Take a moment to think of them. Picture their face, their laugh, a time you shared.
- Start simply. “I was thinking about you today” is a perfect beginning.
- Share a memory. Something funny, something kind, something you have never forgotten.
- Tell them what you love about them. The little things often mean the most.
- Write slowly. Enjoy the feel of the pen and the shapes of your letters.
- Sign it with love. A doodle or a kiss on the bottom is always welcome.
Slow it right down
The magic here is not perfect handwriting or the right words. It is the time and thought you are giving.
While you write, try to notice:
- The warmth you feel thinking about this person
- The sound of the pen on the paper
- How different it feels to typing
- The little smile that creeps in as you remember
Crossings out and wobbly lines are part of the charm. Nobody wants a perfect note. They want yours.
Finish gently
When you have finished, read it back once, fold it carefully and decide how it will find its way to them.
You could also:
- Pop it in the post with a pretty stamp
- Hide it somewhere they will find it as a surprise
- Keep a little stash of cards ready for next time
- Make it your little Sunday evening ritual
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Find a pen. Make a warm drink. Think of someone you love.
Then write them a few words from the heart.
It does not have to be long. It does not have to be perfect.
It just has to be honest.
Because a text is read once, but a handwritten note is often kept for years.
Somebody out there would love to hear from you.
