What is the very first thing you do when you wake up?
For most of us, it is reaching for the phone. Before our feet even touch the floor, we are checking messages, emails, news and notifications. The day has rushed in before we have had a chance to wake up properly.
This week, why not try a little hygge moment to start your day? Wake up 10 minutes early and just sit with your tea before checking your phone. Add the time it takes to make it, and you have a gentle 15-minute start that is all yours.
It is such a small change, but it can shape the whole day.
Make it cosy
A little preparation the night before makes it so much easier to enjoy in the morning.
- Set your alarm 10 minutes earlier
- Leave your phone charging in another room, or face down out of reach
- Put your favourite mug and teabags by the kettle
- Leave a blanket or cardigan on your favourite chair
- Pop your slippers by the bed
Not a tea drinker? Coffee, hot chocolate or a mug of warm water with lemon work just as well.
Find your morning spot
Choose somewhere that feels calm. A chair by the window, the end of the kitchen table, the back step, or even staying tucked up in bed with the curtains open.
Your 15-minute morning
Take it slowly. The rest of the day can wait a few more minutes.
- Get up gently. Stretch, pull on your slippers and wrap up warm.
- Make your tea mindfully. Listen to the kettle, watch the colour change as it brews.
- Settle into your spot. Hold the mug in both hands and feel its warmth.
- Take three slow breaths. Breathe in the steam and the quiet of the morning.
- Look out of the window. Notice the light, the sky and the world waking up.
- Sip slowly. Enjoy every mouthful while it is still hot.
Slow it right down
The magic is in starting the day on your own terms, before anyone else’s needs arrive.
While you sit, try to notice:
- How quiet the house feels
- The warmth of the mug in your hands
- The early morning sounds outside
- How calm you feel without the rush of notifications
If you feel the pull of your phone, that is completely normal. It will still be there in a few minutes, and so will everything on it.
Finish gently
When your tea is finished, take a moment to think about how you would like today to feel. Then go and get on with it, calm and ready.
You could also:
- Write one line in a notebook about how you want the day to go
- Open the window for a breath of fresh morning air
- Light a candle on darker winter mornings
- Make it your everyday morning ritual
Your 15-minute challenge
Tomorrow morning, give yourself 15 minutes.
Set the alarm a little earlier. Leave your phone where it is. Put the kettle on.
Then sit with your tea and let the day begin slowly.
It does not have to be a perfect routine. It does not have to happen every day.
It just has to be yours.
Because how you start your morning often sets the tone for everything that follows.
The world can wait until your tea is finished.
