Have you ever bought a beautiful journal and been too nervous to write in it?
So much journaling advice comes with rules. Gratitude lists, daily prompts, neat headings and colour-coded pages. It can make a simple notebook feel like one more thing to get right.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and journal for 10 minutes with no structure? No prompts, no plan. Just a pen moving across the page, following your thoughts wherever they wander.
The back of an envelope works fine.
Make it cosy
Give yourself a soft place to land:
- Any notebook, cheap and cheerful is perfect
- A pen that glides rather than scratches
- A timer set for 10 minutes, on a clock rather than your phone
- A warm drink and a cosy seat
- A closed door, if you can manage it
Your 15 minutes of free writing
- Settle for a minute. Sip your drink and take a couple of slow breaths.
- Start the timer. Ten minutes, no more, no less.
- Write anything. Even “I don’t know what to write” is a fine beginning.
- Keep the pen moving. Do not stop to fix spelling or cross things out.
- Stop when it rings. Close the book and spend the last few minutes just sitting.
Slow it right down
Your page might be full of worries, shopping lists or half-finished thoughts. That is exactly right. Nobody else ever needs to read it, and there is no such thing as doing it badly.
As you write, try to notice:
- The thoughts that surface once the busy ones are out
- How your handwriting changes as you relax
- Any feelings that turn up unexpectedly
- How much clearer your head feels afterwards
Finish gently
You do not have to reread what you wrote. Simply close the notebook and let it hold those thoughts for you. If you would like to know more about how small pauses like this can help, I have written about finding my way back to myself through a 15-minute pause.
You could also:
- Keep the notebook by your bed for busy-mind nights
- Try it first thing in the morning before the day begins
- Write somewhere new, like a cafe or a park bench
- Tear out the pages and let them go if that feels better
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Find a notebook. Set a timer. Pick up your pen.
Then write without stopping until the 10 minutes are up.
It does not have to make sense. It does not have to be neat.
It just has to be today.
Let the page catch whatever you are carrying.
