When did you last make a proper pot of tea?
Most of our tea is made in a hurry. A bag dunked in a mug, squeezed against the side and drunk while we do three other things.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and make a proper pot of tea, in a teapot? Warm the pot, let it brew, pour it slowly.
Your nan’s old teapot is perfect.
Make it cosy
Before you put the kettle on, get things ready:
- A teapot, and a tea cosy if you have one
- Loose leaf tea or a couple of good teabags
- Your favourite cup and saucer or mug
- Milk in a little jug, if you take it
- A biscuit or two on a plate
Your 15 minutes of tea
- Warm the pot. Swirl a little hot water around it, then tip it away.
- Add the tea. One teaspoon of leaves per cup, or one bag for two.
- Pour and wait. Let it brew for three to five minutes, with the cosy on.
- Pour slowly. Use a strainer if you are using loose leaves.
- Sit down to drink. Hold your cup with both hands and take your time.
Slow it right down
Waiting for tea to brew can feel strange when we are used to everything being instant. Let the waiting be part of it.
As you sip, try to notice:
- The sound of the tea pouring into your cup
- The colour of the tea as it brews
- The warmth spreading through your hands
- How it feels to do just one thing
Finish gently
Have a second cup from the pot if you like. That is one of the joys of making a whole pot.
You could also:
- Invite someone to share the pot with you
- Try a new loose leaf tea each week
- Knit or buy a cosy for your teapot
- Make it your afternoon ritual at four o’clock
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Warm the pot. Add the tea. Wait while it brews.
Then pour yourself a cup and drink it slowly.
It does not have to be fancy tea. It does not have to be a fancy teapot.
It just has to be a proper pot.
Good things are worth waiting for.
