Bring a Little Autumn Indoors: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

When did you last bring something in from outside just because it was beautiful?

Autumn is full of small treasures. Glossy conkers, pine cones, acorns, bright leaves and twigs. Most of the time we walk straight past them.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and bring a little autumn indoors? A few things gathered on a walk can change how a room feels.

A single conker on the windowsill counts.

Make it cosy

Before you start, gather what you need:

  • A bag or basket for your walk
  • A bowl, jar or tray to display things in
  • A candle or two to place nearby
  • A clear spot on a table, shelf or windowsill
  • A warm drink for when you get back

Your 15 minutes of gathering

  • Take a short walk. Around the garden, the park or down your street.
  • Gather a few treasures. Conkers, pine cones, acorns, leaves or a twig of berries.
  • Bring them home. Give them a quick brush or wipe if needed.
  • Arrange them simply. In a bowl, along a shelf or around a candle.
  • Step back and enjoy. Notice how the room feels a little warmer.

Slow it right down

There is no right way to do this. It does not need to look like a magazine. It just needs to make you smile.

As you gather and arrange, try to notice:

  • The smooth shine of a fresh conker
  • The rough texture of a pine cone
  • The colours of the leaves in your hands
  • How nature changes the feel of a room

Finish gently

When you are done, light a candle beside your little display and sit with a warm drink for a moment.

You could also:

  • Add to your display on each autumn walk
  • Let the children choose their favourite finds
  • Swap things out as the season changes
  • Tuck a few pine cones into a basket by the fire

Only gather fallen things, leave plenty for the wildlife, and never leave a lit candle unattended or near dry leaves.

Your 15-minute challenge

This week, give yourself 15 minutes.

Take a short walk. Gather a few autumn treasures. Bring them home.

Then arrange them somewhere you will see them every day.

It does not have to be a big display. It does not have to cost a penny.

It just has to make your home feel like autumn.

Let the season in.
