Borrow a Book Instead of Buying One: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Sand graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading ’Borrow a book instead of buying one – 15 minute hygge moments’ by Collette Costello.

When did you last wander along the shelves of your local library?

It is so easy to click and order a new book, then watch it join the pile by the bed. Meanwhile, there is a whole building of stories just down the road, free to borrow and waiting for someone to pick them up.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and borrow a book instead of buying one? It is gentle on your purse, kind to the planet and there is something lovely about a book that has been read and loved before.

Your sister’s bookshelf counts too.

Make it cosy

Before you head out, get a few things ready:

  • Your library card, or a quick look at how to join online
  • A short list of books or authors you fancy
  • A sturdy tote bag for carrying your finds home
  • A warm coat and comfy shoes for the walk
  • A cosy reading spot waiting for you at home

Your 15 minutes of borrowed stories

  • Go without a plan. Let yourself drift along the shelves for a while.
  • Judge by the cover. Just this once, pick up whatever catches your eye.
  • Read the first page. Sit in a quiet corner and see if it pulls you in.
  • Ask for a tip. Librarians and bookish friends love to recommend.
  • Take two home. One you chose on purpose and one that surprised you.

Slow it right down

Libraries are one of the few places left where you can simply be, without spending anything. The hush, the soft chairs and the rows of spines make it a calm little escape in a busy week.

As you browse, try to notice:

  • The quiet hum of people reading nearby
  • The softness of well-thumbed pages
  • The stamped dates and little marks from past readers
  • How unhurried you feel once you are inside

Finish gently

When you get home, put your borrowed book somewhere you will see it, with a blanket and a lamp close by, so it is ready for your next quiet moment.

You could also:

  • Start a book swap with friends or neighbours
  • Pop a book into a little free library on your street
  • Take the children for story time or to choose their own
  • Try audiobooks or e-books through your library app

Your 15-minute challenge

This weekend, give yourself 15 minutes.

Find your library card. Walk to the shelves. Choose something new.

Then carry it home and save a cosy evening for it.

It does not have to be a bestseller. It does not have to cost a penny.

It just has to be this weekend.

Good stories are meant to be shared.
