Looking for the best hygge books? Whether you are brand new to the Danish art of cosy living or already have a drawer full of candles and woolly socks, a good book is one of the easiest ways to bring more hygge into your life.

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”) is the Danish word for warmth, comfort and togetherness, and it has inspired a whole shelf of lovely books, from research-backed guides and cookbooks to knitting patterns and feel-good novels. If you are new to the idea, start with what hygge actually means.
Below are my ten favourite hygge books, covering everything from the philosophy behind it to the everyday rituals that make it real, plus one cosy bonus novel for winter evenings. Pick one, pour a hot drink and settle in.

1. The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking
The definitive starting point. Written by the CEO of Copenhagen’s Happiness Research Institute, this is the book that helped make hygge a household word in the English-speaking world. Wiking breaks the concept down into practical, research backed elements: lighting, food, togetherness, even how to build your own “hygge emergency kit,” making it the perfect entry point for beginners.
2. The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort, and Connection by Louisa Thomsen Brits
A gorgeous, gift worthy read packed with full colour photography and meditations on slowing down. Brits frames hygge less as a set of rules and more as a way of paying attention, to light, to food, to the people in the room with you. It pairs nicely with a quiet 15 minute daily hygge ritual if you want to put the ideas into practice as you read.
3. The Hygge Life by Gunnar Karl Gíslason and Jody Eddy
Part cookbook, part lifestyle guide. If you want your hygge to come with actual recipes, plus tips on entertaining, decorating, and building simple rituals into your week, this one earns a permanent spot on the coffee table.
4. The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell
Part memoir, part investigative journalism. Russell moves to rural Denmark for a year and sets out to uncover exactly why the country is so consistently happy, hygge included. It is funny, honest, and gives you the cultural context behind the cosiness.
5. Hygge: The Danish Art of Happiness by Marie Tourell Søderberg
A beautifully photographed collection of interviews with real Danes about what hygge means to them. It is less prescriptive than other titles on this list, more a series of glimpses into how the concept actually shows up in everyday Danish life.
6. The Art of Making Memories by Meik Wiking
A follow up from the Little Book of Hygge author, this one zooms out from moment to moment coziness to the bigger question of how we create and hold onto happy memories. If that idea resonates, you may also like how I found my way back to myself through hygge, a more personal look at why these small moments matter so much.
7. American Cosy by Stephanie Pedersen
A Danish American author’s take on translating hygge for a busier, more overscheduled lifestyle. It covers everything from home décor and decluttering to building a more hygge friendly workday, great for readers who want the philosophy without moving to Scandinavia.
8. The Joy of Hygge by Jonny Jackson and Elias Larsen
Recipes, craft ideas, and home projects designed to help you build hygge into your physical space. If you are the type who wants a project list rather than a mindset shift, start here, or take the ideas outdoors with a perfect cosy campfire setup.
9. The Scandinavian Guide to Happiness by Tim Rayborn
Widens the lens beyond hygge to the broader family of Nordic happiness concepts: Swedish lagom, Swedish fika, and more. A great next read once you have fallen down the hygge rabbit hole and want to see how the neighbouring countries approach cosiness and balance.
10. Hygge Knits by Nicki Trench
Because sometimes hygge is best expressed with your hands. This collection of Nordic and Fair Isle knitting patterns (sweaters, scarves, hats) is perfect for anyone who wants their cosiness to be literal, wearable, and homemade.
Bonus Cosy Read: The Hygge Holiday by Rosie Blake

If you would rather curl up with a story than a guide, this one is pure comfort. Clara Kristensen arrives in the gloomy little town of Yulethorpe one autumn and sets about bringing it back to life with a bit of Danish cosiness, much to the suspicion of Joe, a busy City worker who has come home to check on his mum’s shop. It is warm, funny and easy to sink into with a blanket and a hot drink, which makes it a lovely read for the run up to Christmas.

Many of these books, including The Hygge Holiday, are also available as audiobooks, so you can listen while you knit, go for a walk or wind down with a cuppa at the end of the day.
Building Your Own Hygge Ritual
Whichever book you start with, the real magic of hygge is not in the reading. It is in the doing. Light a candle, put the phone away, make a cup of tea, and let one of these books be part of the cosy evening it is teaching you to create.
Hygge does not only live indoors. If you want to take the feeling outside, have a read of how to create a hygge moment this autumn, or my guide to winter hygge rituals for the darkest months once the nights draw in.
