Take a 15 Minute Pause with No Phone: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Beige graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading ’Take a 15 minute pause with no phone – 15 minute hygge moments’ by Collette Costello.

How many times have you picked up your phone today without really meaning to?

Waiting for the kettle, sitting in the car, those few spare minutes before the next thing. Every little gap gets filled with a scroll, a message or a quick check of the news, and our minds never get a moment to themselves.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and take a 15 minute pause with no phone? No screen, no notifications, no checking. Just a proper break for your busy head.

Staring out of the window is the whole plan.

Make it cosy

Before you put the phone away, get a few things ready:

  • A drawer, basket or other room to leave your phone in
  • A kitchen timer or clock, so you are not tempted to check the time on your screen
  • A comfy chair near a window
  • A soft throw to pull over your knees
  • A glass of water or a warm drink

Your 15 minutes of switched off

  • Put it away. Out of sight really does help it go out of mind.
  • Set your timer. Fifteen minutes, then forget about the clock.
  • Sit down properly. Feet on the floor or tucked up, shoulders loose.
  • Let your eyes wander. Look out of the window, at the sky, at the room around you.
  • Ride out the itch. When you feel the urge to reach for your phone, just notice it and let it pass.

Slow it right down

The first few minutes might feel twitchy, even a little boring. That is fine. Boredom is often where rest begins.

As you sit without your phone, try to notice:

  • How often your hand wants to reach for it
  • The thoughts that pop up when there is space for them
  • Details in the room you have stopped seeing
  • How your eyes and shoulders feel without a screen in front of you

Finish gently

When the timer goes, take a moment before you pick your phone back up. Ask yourself whether you really need it right now. I have written more about why this matters in how I found my way back to myself through a 15-minute pause.

You could also:

  • Make it a daily habit at the same time each afternoon
  • Charge your phone outside the bedroom overnight
  • Turn off a few notifications you do not need
  • Invite your family to join in with a phone-free quarter hour

Your 15-minute challenge

Today, give yourself 15 minutes.

Hide your phone. Set a timer. Sit by a window.

Then let your mind wander wherever it wants to go.

It does not have to be meditation. It does not have to be productive.

It just has to be today.

The world can wait for fifteen minutes.
