Is there a jumper-shaped gap in your wardrobe this autumn?
As the evenings get colder, it is tempting to grab the first new knit we see online. But some of the softest, most well-made jumpers are already out there, folded on a charity shop shelf or waiting in a vintage rail.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and choose secondhand for your next cosy jumper? A preloved knit is kinder to your purse and to the planet, and it often has a lovely, lived-in softness.
Slightly too big is perfect.
Make it cosy
Whether you browse online or pop into town, set yourself up first:
- A rough idea of the colour and style you would love
- Your favourite jumper to check sizes against
- A list of nearby charity shops or a secondhand app
- A cup of something warm if you are browsing from the sofa
- A tote bag in your pocket if you are heading out
Your 15 minutes of preloved knitwear
- Look secondhand first. Before you buy new, give preloved a proper chance.
- Feel the fabric. Wool, cotton and soft blends tend to wear beautifully.
- Check it over. Look at the cuffs, elbows and seams for any wear.
- Try it on. Notice how it feels around your shoulders and wrists.
- Choose with love. Only take it home if it makes you want to snuggle in.
Slow it right down
Secondhand shopping is a gentle treasure hunt. There is no rush, no pressure and no algorithm telling you what to buy. Just you, a rail of jumpers and a little patience.
As you browse, try to notice:
- The colours and textures that draw your hand
- Little details like cable knits, wooden buttons or patches
- How a well-worn knit feels softer than a brand new one
- The small thrill when you find the right one
Finish gently
Once your jumper is home, give it a gentle wash, let it dry flat and then pull it on with a warm drink. It is a small, autumn hygge moment all of its own.
You could also:
- Donate a jumper you no longer wear in its place
- Swap knits with a friend or sister
- Look for secondhand scarves, hats and blankets too
- Make secondhand your first stop for every cosy buy
Your 15-minute challenge
This weekend, give yourself 15 minutes.
Pick a charity shop or an app. Browse the knitwear. Feel for the softest one.
Then bring home a jumper with a story already stitched in.
It does not have to be designer. It does not have to be brand new.
It just has to be this weekend.
The best jumpers have been hugged before.
