Who in your life would love a meal they did not have to make?
We often cook for others when there is a reason. A new baby, an illness, a birthday. But there is something extra special about food that arrives for no reason at all.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and cook for someone else, just because? A tray of flapjacks for a neighbour, a pot of soup for a tired friend, or a favourite tea for your other half.
A cheese toastie made with love counts.
Make it cosy
Get yourself ready for a little kitchen kindness:
- One person in mind who could do with a lift
- A simple recipe you know they will enjoy
- A tub, jar or tin to carry it in
- A scrap of paper for a little handwritten note
- Your apron on and some music playing
Your 15 minutes of cooking with care
- Think of them. What do they like? What would make them smile?
- Keep it simple. Biscuits, soup, a loaf or a pasta bake are perfect.
- Cook with them in mind. Add the extra cheese they love, or leave out what they don’t.
- Pack it up nicely. A clean tub, a tea towel, a bit of string.
- Write a few words. Thinking of you is plenty.
Slow it right down
Cooking for someone else feels different from cooking because you have to. There is a quiet joy in stirring a pot while picturing someone enjoying it later.
As you cook, try to notice:
- The care you put into each small step
- The smells drifting through the house
- How good it feels to make something to give away
- The little flutter of looking forward to their reaction
Finish gently
Drop it round, leave it on the doorstep with a message, or serve it up at your own table. However it arrives, it will be appreciated.
You could also:
- Make a double batch and keep one for yourself
- Cook for an elderly neighbour once a month
- Let the children decorate the label or the note
- Pass on the recipe if they ask for it
Do check for any food allergies before you cook, and label what is inside.
Your 15-minute challenge
This week, give yourself 15 minutes.
Choose your person. Pick a simple recipe. Cook it with care.
Then hand it over with a smile and a few kind words.
It does not have to be impressive. It does not have to be homemade from scratch.
It just has to be this week.
Food tastes better when it is made with love.
