Do One Thing Today Purely Because It Feels Good: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

How much of your day is spent on things you actually enjoy?

Most of our hours go on jobs that need doing. Packed lunches, emails, laundry, bills. Even our rest can turn into a task, squeezed in because we know we ought to.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and do one thing today purely because it feels good? Not because it is useful or healthy or productive. Simply because you like it.

Dancing round the kitchen definitely counts.

Make it cosy

Give yourself a little room to say yes:

  • 15 minutes kept free in your day
  • A quick list of small things that make you happy
  • Your to-do list put out of sight for a while
  • Something comfy to wear
  • No guilt allowed in the room

Your 15 minutes of pure pleasure

  • Ask yourself. What would feel lovely right now?
  • Trust the first answer. A song, a nap, a bath, a biscuit, a sit in the sun.
  • Do it fully. Turn the music up, use the nice bubble bath, eat the good chocolate.
  • Skip the justifying. It does not need to earn its place.
  • Savour it. Let yourself enjoy every minute.

Slow it right down

If you are used to looking after everyone else, choosing something just for your own pleasure can feel strange. That is all the more reason to practise.

As you enjoy your moment, try to notice:

  • What you chose when nobody else was deciding
  • Where in your body you feel the good feeling
  • Any little voice saying you should be doing something else
  • How your mood lifts once you let it go

Finish gently

When you are done, take a moment to thank yourself. You deserve to feel good on an ordinary day.

You could also:

  • Keep a jar of feel-good ideas to pick from
  • Make it a daily habit, however small
  • Encourage a friend to do the same and swap notes
  • Notice which joys you keep coming back to

Your 15-minute challenge

Today, give yourself 15 minutes.

Ask what would feel good. Choose one thing. Do it wholeheartedly.

Then carry that good feeling with you into the rest of the day.

It does not have to be sensible. It does not have to be good for you.

It just has to be today.

Feeling good is reason enough.
