When did you last eat lunch without a screen in front of you?
A sandwich in one hand, the mouse in the other, crumbs in the keyboard. Whether you work in an office or at the kitchen table, lunch often gets squeezed in between emails and barely tasted.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and take a proper lunch break, away from your desk? A real pause in the middle of the day can make the afternoon feel much kinder.
A packed lunch on a park bench counts.
Make it cosy
A little planning makes it much easier to actually step away:
- Your lunch slot blocked out in your diary
- Something you are looking forward to eating, packed or ready to heat
- A proper plate, bowl or napkin rather than the packaging
- A spot away from your desk: a kitchen table, a window seat, a bench outside
- A warm drink or a flask of soup on chilly days
Your 15 minutes of midday rest
- Close the laptop. Shut it or switch the screen off so it is not calling you back.
- Move somewhere else. Even a different room changes how the break feels.
- Lay it out nicely. Put your food on a plate and sit down properly to eat.
- Eat without scrolling. Taste each mouthful and look out of the window instead.
- Stretch before you go back. Roll your shoulders and take a few deep breaths.
Slow it right down
It can feel a bit guilty walking away when the inbox is full. But the work will still be there in 15 minutes, and you will come back to it feeling more human.
As you eat, try to notice:
- The flavours and textures you usually rush past
- How your eyes feel resting on something further away than a screen
- The sounds of the world carrying on outside
- How much more satisfied you feel when you actually taste your food
Finish gently
Before you sit back down to work, take a short walk round the block or simply stand in the fresh air for a minute. If you have a park nearby, it is worth remembering the benefits of being in nature, even for a few minutes.
You could also:
- Invite a colleague or friend to join you once a week
- Keep a small tablecloth or nice napkin in your drawer
- Make Friday lunch a little treat, eaten slowly
- Set an out-of-office style status so people know you are on a break
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Close the laptop. Find another seat. Put your lunch on a plate.
Then eat slowly and let the middle of your day breathe.
It does not have to be a long lunch. It does not have to be a fancy meal.
It just has to be today.
Your lunch break belongs to you.
