Do you ever sit down, then jump straight back up because something needs doing?
So many of us carry a quiet voice that says rest has to be earned. Finish the washing first. Answer one more email. Tidy the kitchen, then you can relax. Somehow the list never ends, and neither does the guilt.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and give yourself permission to do nothing productive? Not as a reward for a busy day, but simply because you are allowed.
The dishes can wait. Honestly.
Make it cosy
Make it easy to stay put:
- A seat where you cannot see the laundry pile
- Your to-do list folded away in a drawer
- A warm drink and something sweet
- A cosy cardigan or blanket
- A little note to yourself that says “this is allowed”
Your 15 minutes of guilt-free rest
- Say it out loud. “I am allowed to rest without earning it.”
- Drop the goals. No self-improvement, no learning, no planning.
- Do something pointless. Doodle, daydream, watch the clouds, stroke the cat.
- Catch the guilt. When it pops up, notice it kindly and let it pass.
- Stay to the end. Give yourself the full 15 minutes, not five.
Slow it right down
Your worth is not measured by how much you get done. Hygge has always been about comfort and contentment, not output. You can read more about that in my post on what hygge really means.
As you rest, try to notice:
- The “shoulds” that pop into your head
- How your body feels when it is not rushing
- That nothing falls apart while you sit
- The relief of not having to prove anything
Finish gently
When your 15 minutes are up, get up slowly. If the guilt comes back, remind yourself that rest is part of looking after the people and things you care about, including you.
You could also:
- Write your permission note on a sticky note for the fridge
- Leave one small job undone on purpose each day
- Tell a friend you are practising this and ask her to join you
- Notice who in your life rests easily and learn from them
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Put the list away. Sit somewhere soft. Tell yourself it is allowed.
Then let the time pass without trying to make it count.
It does not have to be deserved. It does not have to be useful.
It just has to be today.
You do not have to earn your rest.
