What went right today, even if it was only something small?
When life is full, our minds tend to hold on to the to-do list, the worries and the things that went wrong. The good moments often drift by without a second thought.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and light a candle and name what you are grateful for? A small flame gives you something to focus on while you gather up the good bits of your day.
A hot cup of tea is worth naming.
Make it cosy
Before you light the candle, set up a little spot:
- One candle you love, on a steady plate or holder
- A comfortable seat where you can see the flame
- A notebook and pen, if you like to write things down
- The big light off and the room a little dimmer
- A blanket around your shoulders
Your 15 minutes of gratitude
- Strike the match. Light your candle slowly and watch the flame settle.
- Take three breaths. Let your shoulders drop with each one.
- Name one thing. Say it out loud or in your head. Start with something easy.
- Keep going gently. A person, a place, a taste, a kind word. Anything counts.
- Stay with the flame. When the words run out, just sit and watch it flicker.
Slow it right down
Some days the list will come easily. Other days you might only find one thing. That is fine. The point is to look for the light, however small.
As you sit with your candle, try to notice:
- The way the flame moves when you breathe out
- Which little things make you smile as you name them
- The warmth in your chest when you think of someone you love
- How the room feels quieter than before
Finish gently
Before you blow out the candle, pick the one thing that felt the most special and hold on to it for the rest of the evening.
You could also:
- Keep a small gratitude notebook beside the candle
- Share one thing with your partner or children at dinner
- Write a quick thank you message to someone on your list
- Make it a Sunday evening ritual to close the week
Never leave a lit candle unattended, and keep it well away from curtains, children and pets.
Your 15-minute challenge
Tonight, give yourself 15 minutes.
Light a candle. Breathe slowly. Name one good thing.
Then name another, and another, until the list feels full.
It does not have to be a long list. It does not have to be anything big.
It just has to be tonight.
There is always a little light to be thankful for.
