Light Candles the Moment It Gets Dark: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Mustard graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading ’Light candles the moment it gets dark – 15 minute hygge moments’ by Collette Costello.

How do you usually feel when you look up and realise it is already dark outside?

As the clocks creep towards winter, dusk seems to sneak up earlier every evening. One minute it is afternoon, the next the windows are black and the house feels a little flat.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and light candles the moment it gets dark? Make dusk your cue, a small ritual that says the cosy part of the day has begun.

Even at half past four.

Make it cosy

Get your candles ready before the light starts to go:

  • A handful of candles, tealights or pillars, whatever you have
  • Sturdy holders, saucers or glass jars to stand them in
  • Matches or a long lighter kept somewhere easy to find
  • A few safe spots in the rooms you use most in the evening
  • A lamp or two, so the big light can stay off

Your 15 minutes of glow

  • Watch for dusk. Glance out of the window and catch the moment the sky turns blue-grey.
  • Draw the curtains. Shut out the dark and keep the warmth in.
  • Light them one by one. Take your time with each match and each wick.
  • Dim everything else. Switch off the overhead light and let the flames lead.
  • Pause and look. Stand in the doorway for a moment and take in the softer room.

Slow it right down

Lighting candles at dusk turns the darkness into something you welcome rather than something you put up with. It is a gentle line between the busy day and a calmer evening.

As the flames settle, try to notice:

  • The little flare and hiss as each match catches
  • The way shadows soften and walls turn golden
  • How the dark outside makes the inside feel snugger
  • A shift in your mood as the evening properly begins

Finish gently

Sit down in the candlelight for a few minutes before you start on tea or bedtime routines. Let the glow be the first thing your evening gives you. There are more ideas like this in my guide to winter hygge rituals for the darkest months.

You could also:

  • Keep a little candle tray ready to carry from room to room
  • Let the children help choose where each candle goes
  • Use battery candles in spots where real flames are not practical
  • Notice how a few minutes earlier each week you are lighting them

Do keep candles away from curtains, pets and little hands, and never leave a flame burning in an empty room.

Your 15-minute challenge

Tonight, give yourself 15 minutes.

Watch the sky. Close the curtains. Strike a match.

Then let candlelight carry you gently into the evening.

It does not have to be fancy candles. It does not have to be a special occasion.

It just has to be tonight.

Let the dark be your invitation to glow.
