Toast Crumpets and Eat Them While They’re Warm: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Mustard yellow graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading ’Toast crumpets and eat them while they’re warm – 15 minute hygge moments’ by Collette Costello.

When did you last eat a crumpet while it was still hot?

Crumpets are often eaten in a rush. Grabbed on the way out of the door, or left on the side to go cold while we do something else.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and toast crumpets, then eat them while they’re warm? Butter dripping through the holes, a hot cup of tea beside you.

Two is a perfectly reasonable number.

Make it cosy

Before you put the crumpets in, set the scene:

  • A couple of crumpets and real butter, softened if you can
  • Your favourite topping: honey, jam, Marmite or just butter
  • A pot of tea or a mug of something hot
  • A proper plate and a cosy spot to sit
  • Your phone in another room

Your 15 minutes of crumpets

  • Put the kettle on. Get your tea brewing first so it is ready at the same time.
  • Toast them well. Give them long enough to go crisp and golden on top.
  • Butter generously. Spread it right away so it sinks into every hole.
  • Sit down to eat. At the table or by a window, not standing at the counter.
  • Eat slowly. Enjoy each bite while it is still warm.

Slow it right down

It might feel indulgent to stop for a crumpet on an ordinary afternoon. That is completely fine. A little indulgence is part of hygge.

As you eat, try to notice:

  • The crunch of the toasted top and the soft middle
  • The butter melting and pooling on the plate
  • The warmth of your mug in your hands
  • How it feels to simply sit and enjoy

Finish gently

When you have finished, stay a moment longer with your tea before you get up and carry on with your day.

You could also:

  • Make crumpets your Sunday afternoon treat
  • Share a plate with someone you love
  • Try toasting them by the fire if you have one
  • Keep a pack in the freezer for chilly days

Your 15-minute challenge

Today, give yourself 15 minutes.

Put the kettle on. Toast two crumpets. Butter them while they are hot.

Then sit down and eat them slowly, while they are still warm.

It does not have to be a fancy afternoon tea. It does not have to be a weekend.

It just has to be today.

Some of the best moments come with melted butter.
