How many stars can you see from your back door on a clear night?
Most evenings we are lit up by screens until the moment we fall asleep. Even when we step outside, a phone torch or a glowing message pulls our eyes back down.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and watch the stars with no torch and no phone? Give your eyes time to adjust and the sky will slowly fill up.
Three stars and the moon is a good night.
Make it cosy
Wait for a clear night and get ready:
- Your warmest coat, hat, scarf and gloves
- A reclining chair, sun lounger or thick blanket on the ground
- A hot water bottle tucked inside your coat
- A flask of something warm
- Outside lights switched off and your phone left indoors
Your 15 minutes of starlight
- Step into the dark. Leave every light behind you.
- Lie back. Get comfy so you can look straight up without straining.
- Give it time. Your eyes need several minutes to adjust, so be patient.
- Find the brightest one. Start there and let more stars appear around it.
- Simply wonder. No apps, no names needed. Just look.
Slow it right down
The first few minutes might feel empty and dark. Then, little by little, the sky seems to wake up. It is worth the wait.
As you gaze upwards, try to notice:
- Faint stars that were not there a moment ago
- Tiny differences in colour, some white, some golden
- The cold air on your cheeks and the warmth inside your coat
- How quiet the world feels at night
Finish gently
Head back in slowly and keep the lights low for a while so the calm lasts. Clear, frosty evenings are perfect for this, making it one of the loveliest winter hygge rituals.
You could also:
- Bring the children out in their pyjamas and blankets
- Look out for a shooting star and make a wish
- Visit a darker spot away from street lights
- Try it again on a camping trip
Stay somewhere safe and familiar like your garden, or go with someone you trust if you head further afield.
Your 15-minute challenge
Tonight, give yourself 15 minutes.
Leave your phone inside. Switch off the lights. Look up.
Then wait for the stars to come out to meet you.
It does not have to be a dark sky reserve. It does not have to be a perfectly clear night.
It just has to be tonight.
The sky has been waiting for you to look up.
