Time to properly switch off

A hygge retreat is a break with one job: to help you rest. No packed itinerary, no early starts. Just warmth, quiet, good food and time to do very little. Think saunas by a lake, a log fire in a lodge, or a spa where the hardest decision is which robe to wear.
The Hygge Wellness Company shares lots of ideas for slowing down and resetting. Here are ten cosy hygge retreats to rest and reset, plus a few ways to create one at home when you can’t get away.

10 cosy hygge retreats
1. A lakeside sauna cabin in Finland
Finland is the land of the sauna, with millions of them across the country, and a lakeside cabin with your own sauna is the ultimate reset. Heat up, cool off in the lake, then curl up by the fire. Browse cottages in the Finnish Lakeland (affiliate link).
2. Treehotel, Swedish Lapland
Sleep high in the pine trees in one of the striking tree rooms at Treehotel in Harads. It’s quiet, remote and surrounded by forest, with a sauna to warm up in. A true once-in-a-lifetime retreat. See Treehotel availability (affiliate link).
3. A hot tub lodge in the Lake District
Fells, lakes and a hot tub under the stars. The Lake District is perfect for a hygge retreat in any season: walk in the morning, soak in the afternoon, eat by the fire at night. Find places to stay in the Lake District (affiliate link).
4. A Highland lodge near Aviemore
Surrounded by the Cairngorms, Aviemore lodges are made for cosy evenings after a day of forest walks. Look out for red squirrels and, if you’re lucky, a snowy view. Browse lodges in Aviemore (affiliate link).
5. A dark-sky cabin in Northumberland
Northumberland has some of the darkest skies in England. A cabin with a wood burner and a clear night for stargazing is about as hygge as it gets. See stays in Northumberland (affiliate link).
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Watch the stars with no torch and no phone.
6. A tiny home escape
Sometimes less really is more. A tiny cabin with just the essentials strips life back to what matters: warmth, rest and the view. Tiny Homes Holidays even has a cabin called Hygge.
7. A spa hotel in the Cotswolds
Golden stone villages, log fires and a spa to sink into. The Cotswolds is ideal for a gentle weekend of treatments, walks and long lunches in country pubs. Find places to stay in the Cotswolds (affiliate link).
8. A cosy cottage break
A cottage with thick walls, a range cooker and a pile of books is a classic British hygge retreat. Hygge Cottages has inspiration for cosy cottage stays, and my hygge holidays post has more cabin ideas.
9. A Danish summerhouse on Bornholm
Danes love their sommerhus, a simple holiday cottage by the sea. The island of Bornholm, with its sandy beaches, round churches and smokehouses, is a lovely place to try it. Browse stays on Bornholm (affiliate link).
10. A hygge retreat at home
Can’t get away? Make your own retreat. Turn off notifications for a day, light some beeswax candles (affiliate link), run a bath with a natural soap bar (affiliate link), and wrap up in a soft waffle robe (affiliate link). Cook something slow, read, nap, repeat.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Have a nothing day: no errands, no plans.
Rest is not a luxury
Whether it’s a week in a Finnish sauna cabin or a Sunday at home with the phone off, a hygge retreat is a chance to remember what rest feels like. Book something to look forward to, or block out a day in the diary just for you.
