Hygge Travel: 10 Cosy Places for a Slow Trip

Hygge Travel – 10 cosy places for a slow trip, by Collette Costello

Travel slowly, the hygge way

Hygge travel isn’t about cramming in sights. It’s about cosy cafés, candlelit dinners, wandering old streets with nowhere to be, and coming back to a warm room at night. It’s the kind of trip that leaves you rested rather than needing another holiday to recover.

Trip Scholars describes hygge travel as slowing down and savouring each place. Here are ten cosy places for a slow trip, from the Nordic homes of hygge to some lovely spots closer to home in the UK.

10 cosy places for hygge travel

1. Copenhagen, Denmark

Where better to start than the home of hygge? Stroll along colourful Nyhavn, cycle through the city, then warm up with coffee and a cinnamon bun in a candlelit café. Stay somewhere small and characterful: browse boutique hotels in Copenhagen (affiliate link).

2. Aarhus, Denmark

Denmark’s second city is smaller, calmer and full of charm. Wander the old streets of Den Gamle By open-air museum, see the city through the rainbow walkway at ARoS, and finish with dinner by candlelight. Find places to stay in Aarhus (affiliate link).

3. Skagen, Denmark

At the very tip of Denmark, where two seas meet, Skagen is famous for its soft golden light that drew painters here for generations. Yellow houses, sandy walks and seafood by the harbour make it a perfect slow escape. See stays in Skagen (affiliate link).

4. Bergen, Norway

Bergen’s wooden wharf houses at Bryggen, misty mountains and cosy fish restaurants make it a dream for a slow city break. Take the Fløibanen funicular up for the view, then come down for a hot drink. Browse hotels in Bergen (affiliate link).

5. Stockholm, Sweden

The Swedes have their own version of hygge: fika, the daily ritual of coffee and something sweet with friends. Wander the cobbled lanes of Gamla Stan and stop for fika as often as you like. Visit Nordic has a lovely piece on hygge across Scandinavia. Find places to stay in Gamla Stan (affiliate link).

6. Tromsø, Norway

Far above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is one of the best places to see the northern lights from autumn to early spring. Days are short in winter, so life moves indoors: candles, blankets and long dinners. See stays in Tromsø (affiliate link).

7. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh does cosy brilliantly: winding closes, old pubs with open fires and bookshops to lose an afternoon in. Walk up Arthur’s Seat in the morning and spend the rest of the day indoors. Browse hotels in Edinburgh (affiliate link).

8. York, England

York’s medieval streets, the crooked Shambles and its famous tearooms make it a perfect hygge weekend. Walk the city walls, then settle in somewhere warm for afternoon tea. Find places to stay in York (affiliate link).

9. Bath, England

Honey-coloured stone, independent cafés and natural hot springs. Soak in the rooftop pool at Thermae Bath Spa as the sun goes down, then wander back through the lamplit streets. See hotels in Bath (affiliate link).

10. A hygge café day trip

Hygge travel doesn’t have to mean a plane. A day out to a cosy café, like the Hygge cafés in Sheffield and Leeds, with a good book and a long lunch, is a mini-holiday in itself.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Go somewhere with no set plan.

How to travel the hygge way

Wherever you go, a few small things make any trip feel more hygge. Plan less and wander more. Choose a small, characterful place to stay over a big chain hotel. Pack a soft travel blanket (affiliate link) and a travel journal (affiliate link), and leave room in each day for a long coffee. Trip Map World has more ideas for bringing hygge on the road.
