Why cosy is good for you

Hygge and wellbeing go hand in hand. Denmark regularly ranks among the happiest countries in the world, and many people believe hygge is part of the reason. It’s a way of living that puts comfort, connection and calm first, which is exactly what a busy, stressed mind needs.
Everyday Health describes hygge as a form of self-care, and even nurses have written about using hygge to promote wellness and coping. Here are ten ways hygge can help your mind, and a small way to try each one.

10 ways hygge supports your wellbeing
1. It helps you slow down
Hygge gives you permission to stop rushing. Even a short pause lets your nervous system settle. A few slow breaths with a warm drink is a simple place to start.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Breathe slowly before you start your day.
2. It brings you into the present
Hygge is mindfulness without the effort. When you notice the warmth of a mug or the flicker of a candle, you’re fully in the moment. Calm’s guide to practising hygge explains this link between hygge and mindfulness beautifully.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Notice three sounds around you right now.
3. It eases stress
Soft light, warmth and familiar comforts send your body a signal that you’re safe. That’s why a cosy evening can feel so restoring after a hard day. Read more in my guide to stress management for women.
4. It strengthens connection
Feeling close to others is one of the strongest predictors of happiness. Hygge is often shared: a meal, a walk, a board game. Almost the Weekend explores this link between hygge, connection and mental wellbeing.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Have a proper, unrushed catch-up over tea.
5. It improves sleep
Dimming the lights, putting your phone away and getting cosy in the evening all help your body prepare for sleep. A dimmable bedside lamp (affiliate link) makes it easy to wind down gently.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Dim the lights an hour before sleep.
6. It supports you through winter
Dark days can bring low moods. Hygge turns winter into something to enjoy rather than endure. Protea Solutions calls it a wellbeing mindset for the winter months. My post on winter hygge rituals has more ideas.
7. It encourages self-kindness
Hygge is gentle. It’s about treating yourself the way you’d treat a friend who’s tired: a blanket, a warm drink, a rest. A natural soap bar (affiliate link) and a slow bath are a lovely way to practise it.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Write yourself a love letter.
8. It gets you outside
Danes are outdoors in all weathers, and time in nature is proven to lower stress. Read my top 10 science-backed health benefits of being in nature and 50 wellbeing benefits of camping.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Take a short walk somewhere green.
9. It cuts down screen time
Hygge activities are naturally screen-free: reading, baking, chatting, crafting. Swapping even 15 minutes of scrolling for something hands-on can lift your mood. My Online Therapy explains why this matters for mental health.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Take a 15-minute pause with no phone.
10. It builds gratitude
Hygge trains you to notice what’s good right now. Over time, that habit of noticing can make you feel more content with everyday life. Curious Motion shares more simple ways hygge can help.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Light a candle and name what you are grateful for.
Small habits, big difference
Hygge won’t fix everything, and if you’re struggling with your mental health it’s always worth talking to your GP. But small, cosy habits can make everyday life feel calmer and kinder. Start with one, and build from there. My 100 Days of Hygge Habits box gives you a gentle idea for every day.
