When did you last go for a walk with nowhere to be?
Most of our walks are journeys. To the shop, the school gate, the station. And most of them come with a podcast, a playlist or a phone call in our ears.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and take a walk with no destination and no podcast? Just you, your feet and whatever you find along the way.
Getting lost a little is allowed.
Make it cosy
Before you head out, get yourself ready:
- Comfy shoes you can wander in
- A warm coat, hat or scarf
- Your phone tucked away, on silent
- Your headphones left at home
- A little curiosity
Your 15 minutes of wandering
- Step out. Leave your headphones at home and walk out of the front door.
- Choose on a whim. Turn left or right, whichever feels right.
- Follow what’s interesting. A pretty street, a path, a patch of trees.
- Listen. Hear your footsteps, the birds, the traffic and the wind.
- Wander back. When 15 minutes is up, make your way home slowly.
Slow it right down
Without a destination, there is no reason to rush. Walk a little slower than usual. Look up. Let your thoughts drift wherever they want to go.
As you settle in, try to notice:
- Sounds you usually block out with headphones
- Houses, gardens and trees you have never noticed
- How your mind settles when nothing is playing
- How the air smells and feels today
Finish gently
When you get home, make a warm drink and sit for a moment. If you enjoyed it, try taking a short walk somewhere green next time.
You could also:
- Take a different turning each time you go
- Bring a friend and walk in easy silence
- Pick up a leaf or pebble to remember it by
- Make wandering a weekly habit
Your 15-minute challenge
This week, give yourself 15 minutes.
Leave the headphones behind. Step out of the door. Turn whichever way you like.
Then just walk and listen.
No route. No podcast. No goal.
Just you, the world around you, and nowhere you have to be.
