Is there anything cosier than being warm inside while a storm rolls by?
When the wind howls and the rain lashes the windows, most of us draw the curtains and turn up the telly. But a storm is one of nature’s best shows, and you have the perfect seat.
Next time the weather turns wild, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and watch the storm from inside, wrapped in a blanket? The noise outside makes the warmth inside feel even more special.
Let the weather do its thing.
Make it cosy
As soon as the wind picks up, gather:
- Your biggest, softest blanket
- A hot drink, like tea, cocoa or something spiced
- A chair pulled close to a window
- A lamp on low, or a candle safely lit
- Warm socks for your feet
Your 15 minutes of storm watching
- Get ready. When the wind or rain picks up, grab your blanket and make a hot drink.
- Find your seat. Sit by a window where you can see the sky and the trees.
- Watch. Notice the clouds racing, the branches bending and the puddles growing.
- Listen. Close your eyes for a minute and hear the rain on the glass.
- Feel it. Enjoy being warm, dry and safe inside.
Slow it right down
There is nothing to do about the weather, and that is the point. Let it be loud while you stay still. Wrap the blanket a little tighter and simply watch.
As you settle in, try to notice:
- The different sounds of wind, rain and gusts against the house
- How the light changes as clouds pass over
- The warmth of the mug in your hands
- How calm you feel while everything outside is wild
Finish gently
When the storm settles, take a moment before you get up. If you love rainy days, try watching the rain from somewhere warm next time it drizzles.
You could also:
- Keep a storm basket with a blanket, candles and a good book
- Make a pot of soup to enjoy afterwards
- Invite someone to watch with you
- Write down one thing you noticed
Your 15-minute challenge
Next time a storm is forecast, give yourself 15 minutes.
Blanket round your shoulders. Hot drink in hand. Seat by the window.
Watch the weather do its thing.
No rushing out. No worrying. No screens.
Just you, warm and safe, while the world outside goes wild.
