How many takeaway cups have passed through your hands this month?
On busy mornings, the coffee shop queue can feel like the only treat we get. A paper cup, a quick sip on the go and then straight into the bin.
This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and make a hot drink in a reusable cup? Brew it slowly at home, just how you like it, and carry that little bit of home comfort with you.
Instant coffee is fine.
Make it cosy
Before you pop the kettle on, gather a few things:
- A reusable cup or flask you love the look of
- Your favourite tea, coffee or hot chocolate
- A splash of milk, a spoon of honey or a sprinkle of cinnamon
- A warm scarf or coat if you are heading outside
- A bench, a doorstep or a window seat to enjoy it on
Your 15 minutes of homemade warmth
- Warm the cup. Swirl a little hot water round it first so your drink stays toasty.
- Brew it properly. Let the tea steep or the coffee bloom. No rushing.
- Add your touch. Make it exactly how you would order it if you were treating yourself.
- Pop the lid on. Check it is snug and take it with you.
- Find your spot. Sit somewhere for a few minutes and simply sip.
Slow it right down
A drink you have made with care tastes of home, even on a cold walk or a busy commute. Let it be a small, warm pause in your day rather than another thing to rush.
As you sip, try to notice:
- The warmth of the cup through your gloves or fingers
- The steam curling out as you lift the lid
- How it tastes just the way you like it
- The quiet good feeling of one less cup in the bin
Finish gently
When you get home, give your cup a quick rinse and leave it by the kettle, ready for next time. Small swaps like this are one of the simplest sustainable habits to carry everywhere you go.
You could also:
- Keep a spare reusable cup in the car or your work bag
- Take a flask of hot chocolate on a family walk
- Make an extra cup for a friend you are meeting
- Try a new tea blend each week
Do take care with just-boiled water, and check the lid is on securely before you carry a hot drink.
Your 15-minute challenge
Today, give yourself 15 minutes.
Boil the kettle. Fill your reusable cup. Step outside.
Then find somewhere to sit and sip it slowly.
It does not have to be a fancy latte. It does not have to come from a café.
It just has to be today.
Home comforts travel well.
