Start a Jigsaw with No Rush to Finish: The 15-Minute Hygge Moment

Blush pink graphic with knitted-pattern borders reading 'Start a jigsaw with no rush to finish – 15 minute hygge moments' by Collette Costello.

When did you last do a jigsaw?

Jigsaws have a way of making time slow down. Hunting for the right piece, the quiet click when it fits, the picture slowly appearing.

This week, why not take 15 minutes for a little hygge moment and start a jigsaw, with no rush to finish? Fifteen minutes today, fifteen more another day.

Even a few edge pieces count.

Make it cosy

Before you tip out the pieces, set the scene:

  • A jigsaw with a picture you love
  • A table or board where it can stay out
  • Good light, a lamp if it is evening
  • A pot of tea or a warm drink
  • Some quiet music or the radio on low

Your 15 minutes of puzzling

  • Tip out the pieces. Turn them all picture side up.
  • Find the edges. Pick out the straight edge pieces first.
  • Sort by colour. Make little piles of sky, grass or whatever your picture has.
  • Fit a few pieces. Enjoy each one as it slots into place.
  • Stop when you are ready. Leave it out to come back to another day.

Slow it right down

It is tempting to keep going until it is finished. There is no rush. Leaving it out to return to is part of the pleasure.

As you work, try to notice:

  • The satisfying click of a piece fitting
  • How your mind quietens as you focus
  • The colours and details in the picture
  • How time seems to slip by gently

Finish gently

When your 15 minutes are up, leave the puzzle where it is and enjoy seeing it as you pass by.

You could also:

  • Do it together with family, one piece each
  • Keep a jigsaw on the go all winter
  • Swap finished puzzles with friends
  • Try a wintry or cosy picture for the season

Your 15-minute challenge

This week, give yourself 15 minutes.

Find a jigsaw. Clear a space. Tip out the pieces.

Then fit a few together, slowly.

It does not have to be finished. It does not have to be a big one.

It just has to be started.

Some things are better done slowly, one piece at a time.
