12 Hygge Home Decor Ideas: How to Hygge Your Home

Hygge home: 12 cosy decor ideas for every room by Collette Costello, pink graphic with knitted colour-block borders

What makes a hygge home?

Soft light, layered textures and a glowing fire: the heart of a hygge home.

A hygge home isn’t about buying a new look. It’s a home that feels safe, soft and calm the moment you walk in. Think warm lamplight instead of the big light, a blanket within reach of every seat, and a corner that’s just for you.

The Danes have been doing this for generations. As Hammonds puts it, the cooler months are the perfect time to get cosy and create a hygge home. The good news is that most of these ideas cost little or nothing, and you can start tonight.

12 hygge home decor ideas

1. Swap the big light for lamps

Lighting is the quickest way to hygge your home. Overhead lights make a room feel like an office. Two or three lamps at different heights, with warm white bulbs, make it feel like a hug. Look for table lamps with linen shades (affiliate link) and bulbs marked 2700K or lower.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Swap harsh overhead lighting for a lamp.

2. Light real candles every evening

Candles are at the heart of hygge in Denmark. Group a few on a tray so they feel intentional, and choose natural wax so the air stays clean. Natural beeswax candles (affiliate link) burn with a soft honey glow.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Light candles the moment it gets dark.

3. Layer blankets and throws

Keep a soft throw on every sofa and chair so nobody has to go looking for one. Mix textures: chunky knit, wool and brushed cotton. A chunky knit throw (affiliate link) adds instant cosiness to even the plainest sofa.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Layer two blankets instead of one.

4. Make a hyggekrog (a cosy nook)

Danes love a hyggekrog, a little nook to curl up in. It might be a window seat, an armchair in a corner or a pile of floor cushions. Add a lamp, a blanket and a small table for your tea, and you have the cosiest spot in the house.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Build a cosy corner with a blanket and a lamp.

5. Choose a calm, natural colour palette

Hygge colours are soft and earthy: cream, oatmeal, sage, warm grey and the odd touch of rust or dusky pink. You don’t need to repaint. Swapping cushion covers and a throw is often enough to change the whole feel of a room.

6. Bring in wood, wool and linen

Natural materials feel warm to the touch and age beautifully. A wooden chopping board left out, a wool rug, linen curtains and stoneware mugs all add quiet texture. FTD’s guide to hygge decor has a handy visual of the dos and don’ts.

7. Add a sheepskin or soft rug

Cold floors are the enemy of hygge. A sheepskin rug (affiliate link) by the sofa or bed, or a thick wool rug underfoot, makes a room feel warmer straight away. Faux sheepskin works just as well if you prefer.

8. Bring nature indoors

Branches in a jug, a bowl of pine cones or a few trailing plants connect your home to the season outside. In autumn, gather leaves and conkers on a walk. In spring, a jar of wildflowers on the kitchen table is pure hygge.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Bring a little autumn indoors.

9. Make your bedroom a hygge retreat

A hygge bedroom is calm and uncluttered, with layered bedding and a soft bedside light. Swap to brushed cotton bedding (affiliate link) when the nights draw in, and keep phones out of reach so the room stays restful.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Swap your bedding for something cosier.

10. Fill the air with gentle scent

Smell is the sense we forget, but it shapes how a room feels. Pine, cinnamon, orange peel or fresh baking all say “home”. A natural reed diffuser (affiliate link) in a seasonal scent is an easy way to change the mood with the time of year.

11. Keep clutter low and favourite things close

Hygge isn’t minimalism, but it isn’t clutter either. Clear the surfaces you look at most, then leave out the things you love and use: a favourite mug, a stack of books, a bowl of fruit. A home should look lived in, not like a showroom.

12. Create a hygge home office

If you work from home, bring hygge to your desk too. A plant, a lamp instead of the ceiling light, a cushion for your chair and a proper mug make long days gentler. Climadoor’s hygge home ideas also show how letting in natural light changes a room.

Your 15-minute hygge moment: Swap your usual mug for your favourite one.

Start with one room

You don’t need to hygge your whole home in one weekend. Pick the room you spend most evenings in, switch on a lamp, light a candle and add a blanket. Notice how different it feels, then move on to the next.
