A slower, softer way to live

The hygge lifestyle isn’t a trend you buy into. It’s a way of living that the Danes have practised for centuries: slowing down, being present and finding comfort in simple things. A warm drink held in both hands. Dinner with people you love. A walk with nowhere to be.
As Denmark’s official website explains, hygge is about atmosphere and feeling, not things. That’s good news if you’re busy, because you don’t need more time or money. You just need to notice the moments you already have.

12 simple ways to live a hygge lifestyle
1. Start the day slowly
How you begin the morning sets the tone for the whole day. Before you reach for your phone, give yourself ten quiet minutes with a cup of tea by the window. It feels like a small thing, but it’s one of the easiest hygge habits to keep.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Wake up 10 minutes early and just sit with your tea.
2. Make light part of your evening
Danes burn more candles per person than almost anyone in Europe. When the light fades, switch off the big light and light a few candles instead. Natural beeswax candles (affiliate link) give a soft, warm glow that makes any evening feel special.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Light candles the moment it gets dark.
3. Eat together, without screens
Shared meals are at the centre of Danish life. Set the table, put phones in another room and take your time. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Soup and bread eaten together counts.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Have a phone-free meal with someone you love.
4. Wear what feels good
A hygge lifestyle puts comfort first. Change into soft clothes as soon as you get home: a chunky jumper, thick socks, a knitted headband to keep your ears warm on a walk.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Change into your comfiest clothes as soon as you get home.
5. Get outside every day
Hygge isn’t only indoors. Danes are outdoors in all weathers, then come home to warm up. A short walk somewhere green, a sit in the garden, or a flask of coffee on a bench all count. There’s real science behind it too: read my top 10 science-backed health benefits of being in nature.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Take a short walk somewhere green.
6. Make time for the people you love
Hygge is often shared. VisitDenmark describes it as the warmth of being with people you feel safe with. Invite a friend over for tea, ring someone just to catch up, or plan a slow Sunday lunch.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Invite someone over just for tea.
7. Choose experiences over things
The hygge lifestyle is quietly anti-consumer. It values a games night over a shopping trip and something mended over something new. Country Living’s guide sums it up well: hygge is about feeling, not stuff.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Play a board game instead of watching TV.
8. Read real books
Curling up with a paper book is one of the most hygge things you can do. If you want to understand the Danish way of life, start with The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking (affiliate link), then browse my list of the best hygge books.

9. Create a cosy corner at home
Every hygge home has a hyggekrog, a nook to curl up in. All you need is a comfy seat, a lamp and a soft knitted throw (affiliate link). Benuta’s hygge lifestyle guide has lovely ideas for textures and rugs.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Build a cosy corner with a blanket and a lamp.
10. Practise gratitude
Hygge is really about noticing what’s good right now. At the end of the day, write down three small things you enjoyed. A gratitude journal (affiliate link) makes it easy to keep going.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Write down three good things from the day.
11. Give yourself permission to rest
Busy women often feel guilty for stopping. Hygge says rest is not a reward you have to earn. Inspire the Mind looks at how this kind of slowing down supports our mental health.
Your 15-minute hygge moment: Give yourself permission to do nothing productive.
12. Build small daily rituals
A hygge lifestyle is built from small, repeated moments rather than big changes. If you’d like a gentle nudge each day, my 100 Days of Hygge Habits box gives you one simple idea to try every day. There’s also a digital card deck version.
